Tipping Guide and Standards in Quebec

Customs vary by service and context. These practical benchmarks are not legal requirements.

Restaurant table service: 15–20%.

Hairdresser or barber: 15%.

Food delivery: 10–15% (suggested minimum of $5).

Taxi or Uber: 10–15%.

Bartender: $1 per drink or 15%.

15% is a standard benchmark; 18% is common in large cities. Suggested terminal options as high as 25% are often described as “tip fatigue.” These are practical observations, not legal rules.

Quebec Bill 72: suggested percentages before tax

Since May 7, 2025, in Quebec, tip percentages suggested by a merchant must be calculated before GST and QST. This rule applies to percentages suggested by the merchant; it does not apply across Canada and does not necessarily govern every private tip calculation.

Who owns tips?

Tips belong to the employee who provided the service. An employer cannot impose or interfere with tip-sharing arrangements among employees.

Reporting tips

Tips are taxable income. Employees must report them under the applicable Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec rules.
